Crystal (also known as crystal meth, ice or tina) is a highly purified form of the drug methamphetamine, a strong physical and mental stimulant.
Some people in our community are becoming dependent on crystal. As a result, they may be experiencing problems with their physical and mental health.
Dependence on crystal can be physical, psychological or both.
Physical dependence can result in the body adapting to the drug and getting used to functioning with it. If physically dependent users suddenly stop using the drug, they may experience withdrawal symptoms such as:
- Depression,
- Disturbed sleep,
- Mood swings,
- Headaches,
- Hallucinations.
Psychological dependence on crystal can result in people prioritising their use of the drug over other activities.

Treatment and support options include:
- Telephone counselling,
- One-on-one counselling,
- Residential detox,
- Rehabilitation services.
Getting support from family and friends is also important.
